After a ninth inning scare, the Pioneers get their first win of the season against Oregon Tech

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers got their first win of the season against the Oregon Tech Owls with a final score of 4-3. The Pioneers have struggled thus far with closing out games after being ahead with a lead, but the Pioneers closed out this game with a win. This brings the Pioneers' record to 1-8 for the season thus far.

The Pioneers only had seven batters strike out compared to the Owls 11 batters that struck out. Travis Benham had a great game on the mound with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Dylan Moore had a rough start with one run allowed, two hits, an error, and a walk. Moore pitched a total of 36 pitches, and finished with two strikeouts before Nathan Klein took the mound. In the tenth inning, Jeramy Albert closed the game with two strikeouts and only one walk.

Key Moments

The Pioneers had a strong start to the game with Michael Contreras on base after a single to left field. Cooper Larson continued the streak, and singled to allow Contreras to advance. After Larson and Contreras advanced on a wild pitch by the Owls, Jack Thomson stepped up the plate, and brought home Contreras with a sacrifice fly to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard. Larson followed home to score after a single by Cole Petters which allowed the Pioneers to take the momentum early with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning.

The game went scoreless after the first inning until the third inning when Contreras singled again, but this time Larson brought in Contreras on a double that almost cleared the fence for a home run. So this allowed the Pioneers to gain a bigger lead of 3-1.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Pioneers struggled to close the game out. Austin Conniff started the inning pitching as a sub for Robert Reaser. The first batter for the Owls advanced to first on an error by the Pioneers, and after this the Owls stole the momentum from the Pioneers. At the end of the inning, Conniff finished with two hits, a walk, and two runs. This tied the ball game at 3-3.

In the top of the tenth inning, Albert struggled at first on the mound with two walks right away, but then after struck out two batters which closed the top of the inning. The Pioneers took the win with single by Sam Helms to bring in Matt Donovan to score, and end the game with a 4-3 win.
