Donovan homers as Pioneers take down Whitman in season finale

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- A two-RBI home run by Matt Donovan in his final game scored the game-winning runs as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers came back from a two-run deficit to win 3-2 over the Whitman Blues on Saturday at Borleske Stadium. It was the season finale for the Pios.

Donovan's RBI gave him a career total of 70 including a career-best 26 this season. He finished with 43 doubles, two shy of the school's all-time record, and 160 hits. Freshman Jack Thomson singled in a run in the third and led the team in hits with two.

Andrew Yarak won his third game of the season over six innings with eight strikeouts, matching his season high.

Key Moments

The Pioneers found themselves in trouble early on in the game as the Blues loaded the bases with only one out in the first inning. Yarak struck out David Johnson to give the Pioneers their second out but the Blues' Jake Wishart connected on the next play to score two on a single up the middle. Yarak struck out the Blues' next batter Kevin Nakamura to give him his third strikeout of the inning and end the inning with minimal damage. 

Entering the top of the fourth the Pioneers trailed by only one with Thomson bringing in Cooper Larson in the third to put the first run on the board for the visiting team. The Pioneers' first two batters of the inning, Dylan Moore and Cameron Paton struck out swinging. Jacob Serafini was hit by a pitch to give the Pioneers a runner at first with Donovan next up at the plate. Donovan sent a long shot over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the season. Those two runs put the Pioneers up by one. The Pioneers shut out the Blues the rest of the way to give them their 10th win of the season and fifth conference win.
