First career goal for Adams lifts Pioneers to a home victory

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 79th-minute goal by Lulu Adams, her first career goal, moved the Lewis & Clark Pioneers back ahead of the Whitworth Pirates and the Pios held on for a 2-1 Northwest Conference victory at Griswold Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Rochelle Jordan's pass from the right sideline put Adams on the right of Whitworth goalkeeper Sienna Tanner and Adams scored from six yards out.

"It was a really lucky ball," said Jordan, who notched her second assist of the season. "[The defender] missed it and I was there to capitalize. Good thing Lulu was in the middle because she finished it beautifully."

"She made a beautiful run and I saw her look back at me," said Adams. "The defender gave me that space in front and I checked back and got the goal."

The score brought Lewis & Clark back ahead after Whitworth's Katie Bischoff tied the game in the 73rd minute. Bischoff scored on a penalty kick after Lewis & Clark was called for a handball in the 18-yard box, which is the second-straight game that the Pios have been called for that.

Lewis & Clark (3-6; 2-3 NWC) held a 1-0 lead after Caroline Hennes put in her fifth goal of the season on a 25-yard shot from the right side in the 53rd minute.

Lewis & Clark had chances in the first half. Three minutes in, Anna Saucedo took a shot with space on the right side of the Whitworth net. Tanner (3-3-0) made the save, one of five she had in the match. A seventh-minute header by Carla Thomas missed wide and Hennes forced another save in the 18th minute.

The Pios had an 11-9 advantage in shots with seven of their shots on goal. Starting goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson (2-4-0) won her second game of the season and made two saves.

The 11 shots are the Pios most in the last three games. Jordan said Adams' goal was a perfect example of how their strategy on Saturday was supposed to work.

"To have a goal like that was really good," said Jordan. "It's hard to build when we are just playing with one in front. That's a beautiful example of how it works. We capitalize on mistakes they make and we were able to put it away."

The Pioneers stay in Portland on Sunday to play Whitman at noon.
